The firework spectacle "Cologne Koln Lights" (Kolner Lichter) starts with a boat parade from Cologne Koln-Porz over Cologne Koln-Muhlheim to the firework in front of the scenery of the Koln / Cologne old town. The Rhine river boats anchor in front of the Hohenzollern bridge and behind the Deutzer bridge for the big firework. When the boat parade reaches the Cologne Old Town, it’s greeted by the frenetic rejoicing of the people on land. For about 30 minutes, star explosions, lightning bombs and other firecrackers put a spell on the fascinated crowd. During this lights festival in Cologne, which took place for the first time in 2001 and attracts more and more people from year to year, more than 30 pyrotechnists shoot about 4 tons of firecrackers, which go off with about 10.000 shots. The special thing about the firework event is that people who are interested can participate in the combination of the firework music. By use of different media, organizers and pyrotechnists offer the possibility to choose the music from a list of given titles. The final firework music is composed by the most chosen titles. It’s transmitted by about 30 acoustic irradiation towers that are located near the Rhine river banks. The program at the Cologne Rhine river banks is equal to a pop concert. Cologne bands and pop musicians provide the best musical entertainment on an open air stage in Cologne-Deutz. There are also other parties and river bank festivals at other places, where one can party on after the event. A further highlight before the firework event begins is the evening rowing regatta on the Rhine river, which is organized by the Cologne Rowing Club. Teams from everywhere from North Rhine-Westphalia participate. The race starts at the Bayernturm (Bavaria tower) and goes Rhine river downstream to the Hohenzollern bridge while the viewers cheer encouragement.
