In the so-called Backerjungenstadt (baker boys town) Andernach on the Rhine river between Koln / Cologne, Bonn and Koblenz / Coblence with its well kept town wall from the 14th and 15th century the "Fest der 1000 Lichter" ("Festival of the 1000 lights") takes place every year on Friday and Saturday of the first August weekend.
The glowing Rhine river banks on the Konrad-Adenauer Alley (the former freeway B 9) is lighted up with numerous lights two days long.
The big firework is the highlight and crowning end on Saturday evening. Since over 35 years the "Festival of the 1000 lights" have had their fixed place in the Andernach events calendar.

The two-day-long event will be opened on Friday evening with a musical presentation.
A live band with an interesting music show will take care of a colorful entertainment program on the stage in front of the historical Rhine river gate (Historischen Rheintor).
A different group performs different kinds of music every year and enthuses the listeners in good mood.

On both days there is food which takes care of your physical well-being. Numerous wine booths, beer booths and other drinking booths on the festival grounds on the Rhine river banks invite to a drink in happy atmosphere.
The wines come partly from a small vineyard in the wine hills "Leutesdorfer Rosenberg" (Leutesdorf rose hill"), which the town Andernach upkeeps in the opposite Rhine river side wine town Leutesdorf.
This vineyard belongs to the most northern point of the vine growing district of the middle Rhine river (Mittelrhein). Your hunger can be satisfied at one of the numerous snack booths. The young visitors also come to their expense. Among others, they can enjoy theirselves at a merry-go-round.

A music program will be offered on Saturday afternoon, which prepares the guests for the nightly firework.
After nightfall everything starts. Thousands of visitors make their way to the Rhine river banks. Their view goes towards the other Rhine river side.
At about 10:30 p.m. a big firework starts in front of the mountain scenery of the Leutesdorf "Engwetter", which lets the Rhine river valley dive into a sea of lights and colors and changes the Rhine river into a dazzling glitter carpet.
The phenomenal pictures, which are drawn in the nightly sky from Andernach through the exploding fireworks, accompanied by the echo of the firecrackers, which re-echoes from the bordering hills of the Rhine river, don't miss their effect. Similarly to the events of "Rhine in flames" / "Rhine aflame", the "Festival of the 1000 lights" fascinates the visitors magically.
The impression of the firework display is strengthened by the musical entertainment, which resounds from the Rhine river valley. The probably most suited expression for the light spectacle is pure Rhine romantic.

You can have a particular experience if you follow the "Festival of the 1000 lights" from one of the about 15 boats on the Rhine river, which gather in Andernach from different starting points on the Rhine river.
